With a couple of lads returning from injuries, a new signing at Fly Half and a bench full of experienced players, Earlsdon picked up their first win of the 2019/20 campaign with a delightful 11 points to 7 score line against Evesham RFC. With coaches Todd Freemantle and Lee Davies on holiday, not together, Crayton Phillips was brought in to assist Coach Rich Gee.
There was a lot of positivity throughout the team during the game, even after the visitors went 0-7 up in the first half. Earlsdon defended well but there are areas of the game that still need improving on. Earlsdon should have gone in level at half time, the ball was recycled and new Fly Half Sam White fed centre Yousif Shebabi who elected to go on his own instead of passing to the unmarked winger and was held up. Earlsdon pressurised the visitors for the remainder of the first half but went off at half time pointless.
Half Time 0-7
With the experienced replacements now all on, Earlsdon stepped up a gear and were pressuring Evesham in all areas but still couldn’t cross the line as the visitors held firm. They had control of the scrums and a penalty was soon awarded as Evesham front row crumbled, Fly half White stepped up to kick his first points for the club and make the score 3-7. With the rain now coming down making the surface a bit heavier, Earlsdons forwards again caused all kind of problems at scrum time and the ball was soon shipped out to Paddy D’arcy who popped the ball to Full Back Tom Walker who crashed over the line to put Earlsdon ahead 8-7. The conversion out wide was missed.
Earlsdon were now looking more confident as they pushed for another try, the young exchange Ref from Durham, who had a very good game for a 17year old, awarded Earlsdon another penalty with 7 mins to go and White slotted the ball over to increase Earlsdons lead to 11 points to 7.
Evesham came back at Earlsdon but the defence held firm for the remainder of the game and massive sigh of relief was heard around the pitch as the final whistle went and the horrible run of defeats was stopped.
Final Score 11-7
We now sit in 9th position with 5 points from 4 games with Leamington RFC away next weekend.
